DESCRIPTION:Thank you for your interest\, \nWorkers at Harry’s Mother (a youth shelter set up by Janus Youth Programs) are in the midst of wage negotiations. So far these talks have been quite difficult with workers facing layoffs which will translate to inadequate staffing patterns. Workers are additionally being presented with the prospect of only miniscule increases to already substandard wages. These programmatic changes and cutbacks will cause enormous difficulties for staff and youth being served. \nWorkers have effectively been presented with accepting even a miniscule wage increase or forgoing that in order to remain fully staffed. \nParallel to these struggles workers have watched\, not only recently but historically\, as the Executive Director takes thousands in base wage increases and bonuses annually. While we fully understand the difficulties of securing funding sources for non-profits we find this growing economic disparity to be rather troubling. \nMembers of the Industrial Workers of the World\, Portland Solidarity Network\, PDX 15 Now\, Jobs With Justice\, and Black Rose Federation will be gathering at the Janus Youth Programs office located at 707 NE Couch St\, Portland\, OR 97232 at 2:30-4:30 PM on Friday\, August 28th (8/28). \nProvided below is historical background to the previous struggles of Janus workers. The student-led campaign to divest PSU’s $52.3 million endowment from the top\n200 fossil fuel companies is focused on escalating student education and involvement before the PSU Foundation’s Board of Trustees vote in June.  \nDivest Portland State(DPS) goals include\n– Divest from fossilfree.org’s top 200 oil and gas companies\n– Transparency with PSU’s investment portfolio\n– Re-invest in Socially Responsible Investments (SRIs) \nOn May 28th\, Portland State University will hold its 8th annual Sustainability Celebration. The event will begin with a sustainability award ceremony(30 min) followed by a showcase of student projects (1.5 hr). Projects range from scientific work with pollutants\, to reduction of the school’s trash. Last year\, Winona Laduke challenged PSU students to take on divestment of fossil fuels. On May 28th\, we hope to stop business as usual and send a clear message to the Board of Trustees that we should not invest in fossil fuels. This meeting calls for a HUGE AMOUNT OF PUBLIC SUPPORT and passion to make our stance known! \nMay 28th – 2:00pm\nCity Council Chambers\n1221 SW 4th Ave\nPortland\, OR 97204 \n[Note – this is a change from the initially scheduled date of May 14th] \nAs many of your know\, the Historic Landmarks Commission’s (HLC) recent ruling regarding the Mt Tabor Disconnection Project was for Approval With Strong Conditions. https://www.facebook.com/events/1079908102035235/permalink/1086862968006415/\nThe more protections that are put in place to preserve Mt Tabor park and its reservoirs\, the greater the chances of reconnecting them for future use if/when the EPA changes its LT2 ruling in 2016.  \nThe Portland Water Bureau (PWB) has opted to appeal two of these conditions: \n1. Condition B – This condition states that\, following disconnection\, the reservoirs must continue to hold water within the normal historic operating range\, that they must be maintained and cleaned\, and that they can only be emptied (partially or fully) for brief periods of time not to exceed 60 days total (either consecutive or non-consecutive) within a calendar year. PWB is stating that this generous maximum of two months out of every year is operationally unworkable and that there should be no limit; they want it left entirely up to them to decide how often and how long they want to let the reservoirs sit without water.\n2. Condition E – This condition states that the City must fully implement the short- and long-term restorative recommendations contained in the May 2009 Mt Tabor Reservoirs Historic Structures Report. DESCRIPTION:The theme for this year’s march is “Food for Justice”\, seeking the intersectionality of social and environmental justice in a food system that benefits the 1%. \nWhy do we march? \n*Research studies have shown that Monsanto’s genetically-modified foods can lead to serious health conditions such as the development of cancer tumors\, infertility and birth defects.\n*In the United States\, the FDA\, the agency tasked with ensuring food safety for the population\, is steered by ex-Monsanto executives\, and we feel that’s a questionable conflict of interests and explains the lack of government-lead research on the long-term effects of GMO products.\n*Recently\, the U.S. Congress and president collectively passed the nicknamed “Monsanto Protection Act” that\, among other things\, bans courts from halting the sale of Monsanto’s genetically-modified seeds.\n*For too long\, Monsanto has been the benefactor of corporate subsidies and political favoritism. Drilling for Arctic oil is an open attack on people in the global south\, who are already losing communities to rising seas and extreme weather. It could also spell disaster for one of the most unique wilderness areas on the planet and all of its inhabitants. \nShell’s rigs will arrive as we mark the five-year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon disaster. We need a massive peaceful resistance to confront Shell\, and the systems of colonialism\, racism\, and capitalism that drive climate chaos. \nFrom May 16 to May 18\, join us in Seattle for three days of creative\, people-powered resistance to Shell and the climate crisis. We will converge on the Seattle waterfront by land and sea\, transforming Terminal 5 and Harbor Island into a festival of resistance that will nonviolently block Shell’s preparations for Arctic drilling. \nWhile we confront Shell\, we stand in solidarity with indigenous peoples and people of color who endure the brunt of extraction and climate chaos. \nWe will unite in creative action\, including a mass water-based blockade\, and an event focused on working to honor our connections with this beautiful and complex planet. DESCRIPTION:A follow-up to Monday’s protest of the danger of Powell Blvd\, highlighted most recently by the crash that took off Alistair Corkett’s leg.\nMonday’s protest:\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1057435414283935/  \nProtest on SE Powell slows traffic\, draws big crowd \n \nThe Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is the agency almost completely responsible for the conditions on Powell Blvd. and the other Portland state highways (e.g. Barbur Blvd.\, 82nd Ave.) It has consistently refused to prioritize safety\, prioritizing motor vehicle capacity instead.  \nThis is why we are organizing a “Die-in!” at ODOT Region 1 headquarters downtown. We will show the deadly consequences of ODOT’s priorities by acting as the dead and wounded victims of crashes on Powell Blvd. Please bring a white shirt that you are willing to have stains on if you are able; we will bring fake blood! \nMore info about ODOT:\nWe believe ODOT\, with its focus on auto capacity and transport between cities\, is the wrong agency to control arterials within cities.  \nODOT has consistently prioritized auto capacity over lives. This is why 26th Ave. does not have a left-turn signal at Powell\, which would have prevented this accident. In the past\, ODOT refused to put in a left-turn signal because it would slow down cars on Powell. How many limbs and lives does it take to be worth a few seconds or minutes? \nThe problems on Powell are not isolated to the area around 26th. Indeed\, Powell is more neglected and deadly in East Portland. There are no sidewalks on Powell in the vast majority of its length past I-205. Marked crosswalks are few and far between. \nThis is why are calling on the state legislature to pass a bill to transfer Powell and the other urban state highways in Portland to the control of the City of Portland. We are also calling on ODOT to prioritize funding to bring Powell and the other urban state highways up to standards minimally sufficient for city life (sidewalks and crosswalks would be a good start). The City’s Bureau of Transportation\, though not perfect\, is at least more directly responsive to local safety concerns than ODOT. \nThis protest organized by BikeLoudPDX (Monday’s was not – though awesome!)

DESCRIPTION:Many constituents have contacted Rep. Nosse’s office regarding the proposed Nestle Bottled Water Plant in Cascade Locks\, expressing a number of concerns about it. Rep. Nosse understands the importance of protecting our public water\, which is one of our most valued resources. At the request of many constituents he has written a letter to the ODFW Director expressing the many concerns of people in his district\, but he knows that folks in SE Portland have many additional questions & concerns. \nThe Oregon Water Resources Department has regulatory authority over water rights transfers and is the state agency that will approve or deny these applications. OWRD’s public comment period on the project extends through May 14th\, and Rep. Nosse understands that many busy working families don’t have time to find out how to submit comment to state agencies.  \nTo make things convenient for his constituents\, Rep. Nosse is holding an event on Saturday\, 5/9/15 from 11am-1pm at SEIU Local 49 (3536 SE 26th Ave\, Portland\, OR 97202).  \nParking will be available\, but we encourage using public transportation if at all possible. Information on the proposed plant will be available\, as well as laptop stations and paper forms so people can easily & conveniently make their voice heard. The Nosse office & additional volunteers will also be available to take down folks’ input in greater detail for OWRD. \nProtecting Oregon’s natural resources is a priority for Rep.
