SUMMARY:Film Screening: The Hand That Feeds
DESCRIPTION:15 Now PDX and Socialist Alternative Portland are thrilled to be hosting the first Pacific Northwest screening of the award winning film\, “The Hand That Feeds\,” at Portland’s historic Clinton Street Theater. Sponsored by KBOO Community Radio. \nDoors open at 6:30 p.m.\n$5-10 sliding scale at the door\, no one will be turned away on account of money. \nAbout the film:\n“At a popular bakery café\, residents of New York’s Upper East Side get bagels and coffee served with a smile 24 hours a day. But behind the scenes\, undocumented immigrant workers face sub-legal wages\, dangerous machinery\, and abusive managers who will fire them for calling in sick. Mild-mannered sandwich maker Mahoma López has never been interested in politics\, but in January 2012\, he convinces a small group of his co-workers to fight back. \nRisking deportation and the loss of their livelihood\, the workers team up with a diverse crew of innovative young organizers and take the unusual step of forming their own independent union\, launching themselves on a journey that will test the limits of their resolve. In one roller-coaster year\, they must overcome a shocking betrayal and a two-month lockout. Lawyers will battle in back rooms\, Occupy Wall Street protesters will take over the restaurant\, and a picket line will divide the neighborhood. If they can win a contract\, it will set a historic precedent for low-wage workers across the country. But whatever happens\, Mahoma and his coworkers will never be exploited again.” \nAfter the film we will have a discussion with local low-wage workers and organizers who are fighting for a $15 minimum wage. \nDon’t miss out on this great film! One showing only in Portland! \nhttp://thehandthatfeedsfilm.com/ \nhttp://cstpdx.com/show/socialist-alternative-and-15nowpdx-present-hand-feeds

SUMMARY:#YouShellNotPass Day of Mass Nonviolent Direct Action!
DESCRIPTION:WHEN: May 18; Meet @ 7 AM\nWHERE: Duwamish River Fishing Dock (On Harbor Island parallel to Spokane Street)\nWHAT: A day of mass nonviolent direct action + rally.\nWHO: You!\nWHY: To stop Arctic drilling and take a stand against companies like Shell who profit from climate chaos. \nMeet at the Duwamish Fishing Dock at 7:00 – it’s a small boardwalk along Spokane Street on the east side of Harbor Island. We will have a very brief program and then march to Shell’s rigs and nonviolently shut down operations for the day. \nPARKING: There is parking under the West Seattle Bridge\, and off of Marginal Way in West Seattle. Alternatively you could park on Harbor Ave SW in West Seattle or in SODO and walk to the meet-up site. \nWe encourage as many people as possible to prepare and train for nonviolent action. Trainings the week of the action will be posted here: https://shellno.org/trainings.php \nTake the pledge of resistance at http://shellno.org/ and learn more about who we are and how you can get involved! Don’t live in Seattle\, but want to come? Don’t worry\, we’ve got you covered there too! You’ll find all the information you need on our website. \n#YouShellNotPass\nOn January 8\, we learned that Shell will be hosting their Arctic drilling rigs in Terminal 5 of the Port of Seattle. That same day the journal Nature published an article saying that Arctic oil MUST be left in the ground in order to avoid catastrophic climate change. Drilling for Arctic oil is an open attack on people in the global south\, who are already losing communities to rising seas and extreme weather. It could also spell disaster for one of the most unique wilderness areas on the planet and all of its inhabitants. \nShell’s rigs will arrive as we mark the five-year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon disaster. We need a massive peaceful resistance to confront Shell\, and the systems of colonialism\, racism\, and capitalism that drive climate chaos. \nFrom May 16 to May 18\, join us in Seattle for three days of creative\, people-powered resistance to Shell and the climate crisis. We will converge on the Seattle waterfront by land and sea\, transforming Terminal 5 and Harbor Island into a festival of resistance that will nonviolently block Shell’s preparations for Arctic drilling. \nWhile we confront Shell\, we stand in solidarity with indigenous peoples and people of color who endure the brunt of extraction and climate chaos. \nWe will unite in creative action\, including a mass water-based blockade\, and an event focused on working to honor our connections with this beautiful and complex planet. These events will build to a day of Mass Direct Action on Monday\, May 18\, when we will use nonviolent action to SHUT DOWN SHELL and all operations related to their Arctic expedition. \nShell’s drilling rigs are a prime example of the root causes and injustice of the climate crisis. They will generate untold wealth for the few\, while wrecking the climate for everyone\, trampling on indigenous rights\, and causing millions of deaths in the global south. \nFifteen years after the WTO protests\, we will remind the world that corporations like Shell that abuse human\, environmental\, and labor rights are not welcome in Seattle. We are fighting for a world where we can all provide for our families without risking our health\, planet\, or future generations. \nThe fossil fuel economy of exploitation is over. A new world is within our reach. Rise up. Resist. Join us in Seattle!

SUMMARY:March Against Monsanto PDX 2015
DESCRIPTION:The theme for this year’s march is “Food for Justice”\, seeking the intersectionality of social and environmental justice in a food system that benefits the 1%. \nWhy do we march? \n*Research studies have shown that Monsanto’s genetically-modified foods can lead to serious health conditions such as the development of cancer tumors\, infertility and birth defects.\n*In the United States\, the FDA\, the agency tasked with ensuring food safety for the population\, is steered by ex-Monsanto executives\, and we feel that’s a questionable conflict of interests and explains the lack of government-lead research on the long-term effects of GMO products.\n*Recently\, the U.S. Congress and president collectively passed the nicknamed “Monsanto Protection Act” that\, among other things\, bans courts from halting the sale of Monsanto’s genetically-modified seeds.\n*For too long\, Monsanto has been the benefactor of corporate subsidies and political favoritism. Organic and small farmers suffer losses while Monsanto continues to forge its monopoly over the world’s food supply\, including exclusive patenting rights over seeds and genetic makeup.\n*Monsanto’s GMO seeds are harmful to the environment; for example\, scientists have indicated they have caused colony collapse among the world’s bee population. \nWhat are solutions we advocate?? \n*Voting with your dollar by buying organic and boycotting Monsanto-owned companies that use GMOs in their products.\n*Labeling of GMOs so that consumers can make those informed decisions easier.\n*Repealing relevant provisions of the US’s “Monsanto Protection Act.”\n*Calling for further scientific research on the health effects of GMOs.\n*Holding Monsanto executives and Monsanto-supporting politicians accountable through direct communication\, grassroots journalism\, social media\, etc.\n*Continuing to inform the public about Monsanto’s secrets.\n*Taking to the streets to show the world and Monsanto that we won’t take these injustices quietly. \nWe will not stand for cronyism. We will not stand for poison. That’s why we March Against Monsanto

SUMMARY:Portland City Council Mt Tabor Appeals Hearing
DESCRIPTION:*** MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!! *** \nOn May 28th\, City Council will hear the Appeals Case for the Historic Landmarks Commission’s ruling regarding the Mt Tabor Disconnection Project. This meeting calls for a HUGE AMOUNT OF PUBLIC SUPPORT and passion to make our stance known! \nMay 28th – 2:00pm\nCity Council Chambers\n1221 SW 4th Ave\nPortland\, OR 97204 \n[Note – this is a change from the initially scheduled date of May 14th] \nAs many of your know\, the Historic Landmarks Commission’s (HLC) recent ruling regarding the Mt Tabor Disconnection Project was for Approval With Strong Conditions. https://www.facebook.com/events/1079908102035235/permalink/1086862968006415/\nThe more protections that are put in place to preserve Mt Tabor park and its reservoirs\, the greater the chances of reconnecting them for future use if/when the EPA changes its LT2 ruling in 2016. \nThe Portland Water Bureau (PWB) has opted to appeal two of these conditions: \n1. Condition B – This condition states that\, following disconnection\, the reservoirs must continue to hold water within the normal historic operating range\, that they must be maintained and cleaned\, and that they can only be emptied (partially or fully) for brief periods of time not to exceed 60 days total (either consecutive or non-consecutive) within a calendar year. PWB is stating that this generous maximum of two months out of every year is operationally unworkable and that there should be no limit; they want it left entirely up to them to decide how often and how long they want to let the reservoirs sit without water.\n2. Condition E – This condition states that the City must fully implement the short- and long-term restorative recommendations contained in the May 2009 Mt Tabor Reservoirs Historic Structures Report. This work carries a rough price tag of $1.5 million in 2009 dollars\,

SUMMARY:X - Divest Portland State Action
DESCRIPTION:Divest Portland State Action \nPortland\, OR – Portland State University could be the first university in Oregon to divest from\nfossil fuels. The student-led campaign to divest PSU’s $52.3 million endowment from the top\n200 fossil fuel companies is focused on escalating student education and involvement before the PSU Foundation’s Board of Trustees vote in June. \nDivest Portland State(DPS) goals include\n– Divest from fossilfree.org’s top 200 oil and gas companies\n– Transparency with PSU’s investment portfolio\n– Re-invest in Socially Responsible Investments (SRIs) \nOn May 28th\, Portland State University will hold its 8th annual Sustainability Celebration. The event will begin with a sustainability award ceremony(30 min) followed by a showcase of student projects (1.5 hr). Projects range from scientific work with pollutants\, to reduction of the school’s trash. Last year\, Winona Laduke challenged PSU students to take on divestment of fossil fuels. On May 28th\, we hope to stop business as usual and send a clear message to the Board of Trustees that we should not invest in fossil fuels. PSU President Wim Wiewel and Institute for Sustainable Solutions (ISS) Director Jennifer Allen will be present at the event\, both have shown support for the campaign. \nEvent X Action\nWhen: May 28th\, 4 pm\nWhere: PSU Park Blocks (between Smith and Library).\nWhat to wear: BLACK! Everything black…we want to represent an oil spill!\nDetails:\nThe Sustainability Celebration starts at 4 pm in the Smith Ballroom. We will gather at the PSU Park Blocks\, and at around 4:30 the escalation team will gather everyone and walk into ballroom.\nHashtags: #divestpsu \nDivest Portland State \nSign our letter of support for students\, alumni\, and community members.

SUMMARY:Janus Picket & Housing March
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for your interest\, \nWorkers at Harry’s Mother (a youth shelter set up by Janus Youth Programs) are in the midst of wage negotiations. So far these talks have been quite difficult with workers facing layoffs which will translate to inadequate staffing patterns. Workers are additionally being presented with the prospect of only miniscule increases to already substandard wages. These programmatic changes and cutbacks will cause enormous difficulties for staff and youth being served. \nWorkers have effectively been presented with accepting even a miniscule wage increase or forgoing that in order to remain fully staffed. \nParallel to these struggles workers have watched\, not only recently but historically\, as the Executive Director takes thousands in base wage increases and bonuses annually. While we fully understand the difficulties of securing funding sources for non-profits we find this growing economic disparity to be rather troubling. \nMembers of the Industrial Workers of the World\, Portland Solidarity Network\, PDX 15 Now\, Jobs With Justice\, and Black Rose Federation will be gathering at the Janus Youth Programs office located at 707 NE Couch St\, Portland\, OR 97232 at 2:30-4:30 PM on Friday\, August 28th (8/28). \nProvided below is historical background to the previous struggles of Janus workers. While some in positions of power at this agency publicly note the mythology of Janus\, a Roman god signifying transition and doorways\, we remind them that a transition in treatment of workers is long overdue. \nWe hope to see you there. \nMajor Victory for Janus Workers March 21\, 2011\nhttp://portlandiww.org/2011/03/major-victory-for-janus-workers-and-the-portland-iww/ \nRegular updates as the 2011 action progressed:\nhttp://portlandiww.org/tag/janus-youth-programs/page/2/ \nA look back at Janus’ 2011 attempts to subdue worker power and deny wage increases:\nhttp://www.portlandmercury.com/BlogtownPDX/archives/2011/02/07/workers-picket-city-shelter-for-sex-trafficking-victims \n————————–— \nAfterwards\, folks will be invited out to My Father’s Place (523 SE Grand Ave\, Portland\, OR 97214)\, a nearby restaurant\, to recharge ourselves before taking part in Housing Rights For All Rally & March. We will meet at the 4th Street entrance to Portland’s City Hall in downtown at 6 PM. After hearing from some speakers\, we will march across the Hawthorne Bridge to the Multnomah County Building just on the other side\, where we will hold an assembly for individual stories\, group discussion\, and music making. \nThe event page for this action can be located here:\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/881313648603046/ \nWe encourage those who can attend both events to do so! Come to all of them if you can! Lets take up the chants and the streets on this exciting day of action!

SUMMARY:#FloodTheSystem
DESCRIPTION:Fall 2015 – Flood\, blockade\, occupy and shut down the systems that jeopardize our future! \n–> www.floodthesystem.net <– \nStarting this September\, Rising Tide North America is calling for mass actions to shut down the economic and political systems threatening our survival. \nAlready\, hundreds of thousands are streaming into the streets to fight back against climate chaos\, capitalism and white supremacy. \nThis wave of resistance couldn’t be more urgent. To stop climate chaos we need a phenomenal escalation in organizing\, participation and tactical courage. We need a profound social transformation to uproot the institutions of capitalism\, colonialism\, patriarchy\, and white supremacy\, the systems that created the climate crisis. And we need to link arms with allies fighting for migrant justice\, dignified work and pay\, and an end to the criminalization and brutal policing of black and brown bodies. \nWe need to #FloodTheSystem. \nIn the lead up to the United Nations climate talks in Paris\, in December\, we will escalate local and regional resistance against systems that threaten our collective survival. Together\, we will open alternative paths to the failing negotiations of political elites. \nTo do this\, we are calling for individuals and groups to plan their own direct actions\, attend trainings and convene Action Councils to stream smaller efforts into a massive flood of resistance. \nThis is not another protest. It is a call for a massive economic and political intervention. It is a call to build the relationships needed to sustain our struggles for the long haul. To build popular power along the intersections of race\, class\, gender and ability. To collectively unleash our power and change everything. \n— \nGET INVOLVED \nSign up for updates here: http://www.FloodTheSystem.net/ \n#FloodTheSystem organizers are supporting the formation of local action councils that will organize actions relevant to their communities. If you want to start organizing or connect with a regional action council right away\, go here: http://www.FloodTheSystem.net/organize \nJoin us at the US Social Forums in San Jose\, CA and Philadelphia\, PA! \nJune 25-28th Philadelphia\, PA: \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/914456505260452/ \nJune 24-28th San Jose\, CA: \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/982762331764527/
